Pompano Beach city commissioners are actively exploring the possibility of establishing an independent police department, a move that could conclude the city’s longstanding contract with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). This consideration follows a similar decision by neighboring Deerfield Beach to form its own police and fire departments.
During a recent commission meeting, officials reviewed a comprehensive report detailing the logistics and financial implications of such a transition. The report estimates that maintaining the current contract with BSO would cost approximately $75 million annually. In contrast, creating a city-run police force is projected to require around $108.1 million in annual operating costs, which includes expenses for building a new headquarters.
Commissioners expressed concerns over the significant financial investment required for an independent department. However, they also acknowledged potential benefits, such as increased local control over policing policies and operations.
To ensure community involvement in this critical decision, the city has initiated a public outreach campaign. Both in-person and virtual meetings are being scheduled to gather resident input. Additionally, the city is soliciting proposals from consultants to conduct a thorough feasibility study, assessing the financial and operational viability of a standalone police force.
As Pompano Beach continues to evaluate this potential shift, residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming discussions and provide feedback to help shape the future of public safety in the community.
